That'd mess anybody up.Īnd so Ema's a grumpy, closed-off detective who goes through the motions of her job with no passion in it at all. She took her entry exam to join the police forensics unit, only to choke and find herself instead assigned to the homicide division as an ordinary detective, working with the very same prosecutor who got Phoenix disbarred in the first place. She spent years studying abroad to achieve her dream of becoming a forensic scientist, and returned home to finally repay the debt she feels she owes to Phoenix and Edgeworth, and what was her reward? She learned that Phoenix was disbarred during her years away, and his law office no longer exists. She's completely thrown off her Maya Expy origins in favour of becoming a totally different character with convincing, believable reasons for such a massive change. She's a particularly prominent step down from her adult self, given that her earlier-released AJ:AA appearance was the one that actually allowed her to develop into her own person.Įma is wonderful.

I do think she should've been the assistant for the game instead of Kay, who really didn't need to exist. She's got a very cute updated design, but several of her personality traits are gone, and she's basically just a superfluous Edgeworth fangirl who happens to show up and provide a very small number of forensics activities to perform. This can become fairly grating throughout the case's incredibly long investigation phases.īut anyway - Ema's still a good character, with the relationship between her and her sister as the case's very effective emotional core.Įma has almost nothing going for her. Second, her "quirky" dialogue tends to make her come across as kind of an idiot when she's specifically supposed to be a very bright student. "Hey, remember Maya's quirky opinions on this thing? Isn't it funny how Ema's opinion is totally different, but just as quirky?" This kind of stymies her ability to stand out and make herself memorable, because she spends a whole lot of the case's runtime acting as a Maya reminder, rather than her own character. Her two biggest problems are the following:įirst, she was deliberately designed and written to resemble Maya on all fronts, for the benefit of the case's deliberate parallels to the Fey sisters and their storyline in the two following games. She literally only has 5 minutes of screen time in the first Investigations game with a role which could've been really easily written out entirely.Įma's OK. Same for her appearances in the spin-offs, except she's even less relevant in those, and thus less interesting. She's just OK in 1-5, but she's a pretty blatant Maya clone with the only thing to set them apart being a hit-or-miss collection of investigation mini-games (most of them being miss). She improves in SoJ, since she's happier after getting her dream job, and has a lot of fun conflict having to incriminate friends of hers so frequently, but even AJ:AA Ema is pretty good, especially her rapport with Klavier and "done with the world's shit" attitude.Ĭhild Ema on the other hand really needed a personality of her own. The Snackoo-addicted, forensic-fetishist grouch with a heart of gold towards her friends is a great supporting character, with well-established dynamics with much of the rest of the main cast.
